Those who struggle with obesity could be at risk for serious health complications due to being overweight. For some people, just traditional exercise and diet alone don’t help meet weight loss goals. These people could be ideal candidates for weight loss pills and drugs. It’s important to note that weight loss pills should still be used with exercise and diet programs and not just as a stand-alone solution. Weight loss drugs can cause notable weight loss and using the drugs in addition to exercise and diet can produce better results than just lifestyle changes alone. Even with weight loss drugs, instant weight loss is not to be expected, but over time, changes do add up. Losing even a little weight can result in health benefits, including lower blood pressure.

    The Ideal Candidate

The best candidates for weight loss pills will have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or a BMI of 27, and medical issues, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes. These candidates should have already tried exercise and diet programs. If they haven’t had any success with the lifestyle changes then weight loss drugs could be a good option. Your doctor will consider assessments for whether or not lifestyle modifications have been enough for you to not only lose weight but keep it off.

These types of pills are not recommended for pregnant and nursing women. It’s also important to discuss options with a doctor in order to know about any medicine interactions and to make sure you are getting proper dosing. Since many of these drugs work to control appetite and affect your feelings of fullness and hunger, these types of medications can be helpful for those who have feelings of uncontrolled hunger or have cravings for the foods around them.

As with any type of drug, there can be some side effects. The side effects are mild and can include diarrhea, constipation, and nausea. In some cases, there can be some rare but serious side effects. It’s important, to be honest with your doctor about what medications you are currently taking, as some weight loss drugs can interfere with other medications you could be on to help with health conditions caused by obesity.

How Long Do You Need to Take Weight Loss Pills?

Weight loss is going to be different for everyone. Your own individual experience with the pills will determine how long treatment can last. If you are losing weight while taking a specific drug and aren’t having any major side effects then your doctor may decide to keep you on the medication until you reach your goal weight. If the medication doesn’t seem to be helping you lose weight, especially after a period of months, then you may need to change pills or the dosage. After you discontinue the use of weight loss medication, some weight gain may be expected. With the right lifestyle changes, weight gain can be limited, and once you reach a healthy BMI you are able to stop taking medication.

How Do Weight Loss Pills Work?

Many weight loss pills contain one or more ingredients that are meant to increase fat burning, reduce the absorption of fat, or decrease appetite. However, not all pills and supplements are going to be created equal. Many weight loss pills work by making it harder for your body to absorb dietary fat or suppressing the appetite. Depending on the type of weight loss pill, there can be different side effects. Prescription pills can have more side effects than other supplements.

Even though there is no magic bullet for weight loss, weight loss pills can be a helpful tool if you are struggling to lose weight.
