If you want your website to rank on search engines, you have to do keyword research. After all, keyword usage is like the entry slip for the SEO contest. You can’t rank for specific searches without optimizing for specific keywords.

That said, you can’t just settle for common keywords like “electrician” or “HVAC technician”. You have to utilize long-tail keywords as well.

Why are long-tail keywords important to your keyword strategy? We’re going to tell you now!

    What Are Long-tail Keywords?

First and foremost, we need to explain what long-tail keywords are. Long-tail keywords are keywords with great specificity. They typically consist of many words and hone in on particular things or ideas.

So, whereas “electrician” might be a standard keyword, “Omaha emergency commercial electrician” would be a long-tail keyword. As you can see, the long-tail keyword possesses 4 words as opposed to 1 and is much more specific about what the user is searching for.

You can learn more by reading this article.

The Benefits of Using Long-tail Keywords

Using long-tail keywords provides you with a number of benefits. These benefits include the following.

Get Your Foot in the Door

When you first launch a website, it stands no legitimate chance of ranking for general keywords like “electrician” or even “Omaha electrician”, for instance. There’s just too much competition, and the search engine has no reason to rank your website for such a competitive keyword. It’s never even seen your website, after all.

As such, in the early days, the goal should be to get your website familiarized with the search engine crawlers. You can do this by using long-tail keywords. Long-tail keywords have much less competition, and so will enable your website to get its proverbial foot in the door.

Once your website ranks for a few long-tail keywords, you can start to introduce more general keywords. Over time, your website will gain more and more clout with the search engine, resulting in a progressively higher ranking for all keywords used.

Expose Your Website to Active Customers

When a person types a long-tail keyword into Google, it’s because that person is searching for a very specific thing. If that thing happens to be a product or service, then that person is likely trying to purchase something; that person is an active customer.

As such, by utilizing long-tail keywords in your content, you are essentially putting your website in contact with active buyers. No, a long-tail keyword won’t provide as much traffic. But the traffic it does provide will be ready to hand over money.

Optimize Your Website for Voice Search

Voice search is becoming more and more popular on search engines. When people use voice search, they tend to speak naturally. This comes out as long-tail keywords.

So, if you want to capitalize on the increasing popularity of voice search, you need to use long-tail keywords in your content.

Using Long-tail Keywords Is a Necessity

When it comes to SEO content marketing, using long-tail keywords is a necessity. Not only will it help to build your website’s clout with search engines but it will also help expose your website to active customers. This can have a seismic positive impact on your sales.
